Friends with your Nurse Manager?
Professionalism in the workplace is very important. As a nurse, you have superiors that you must listen to and respect at all times. Impudence will only get you into trouble, not to mention on their bad side! In a professional capacity it’s imperative to maintain a good relationship with your boss (think bonus!) At the same time, expanding your relationship to mean more than just ‘work’ can make your job more enjoyable and may also improve your chances at getting that elusive salary hike!
Don’t be afraid to share a bit about yourself. Your boss already knows most of your professional capabilities so cultivate a personal relationship by sharing your job expectations and stories from your past in an interesting way. Don’t hold back on sharing personal details about your family and friends. Feel free to talk about your kids, especially if your boss has some of her or his own. Get advice on the most comfortable scrub top or pair of comfortable shoes. Opening up will likely do the same to her and create an environment in which a bond can be formed.
Tell your nursing manager some of your ideas. Although she may have more experience in the medical field and a better understanding of what is required at work, giving her some insight as to what you may be dreaming up may help her better understand the way you think. Always be respectful, even if you disagree with your directives. If you have a difference of opinion, be sure to discuss it in a calm and civilized manner.
Most lifelong relationships are formed at work so don’t be scared to form a friendship with your nurse manager. Favorable interactions with your boss will do wonders for your mood at work, and can make every day seem like a day out with the gals!
